Hassan

Naked Lunch

Hassan is a wealthy, theatrical host whose lavish parties make political conflict visible as a struggle over who controls the room and its bodies. In his rumpus room, he appears to preside over an ordered spectacle of luxury; when A.J. disrupts that spectacle, Hassan’s authority gives way to outrage, and he expels the guest he cannot control.

Identity and Setting

Hassan’s character is introduced through the room associated with him: a gilt-and-red-plush interior, a rococo bar backed by pink shell, and guests in evening dress. The space is designed for display and indulgence, with sweet drinks served through alabaster tubes and a Mugwump seated at the bar. This is not a neutral venue but an extension of Hassan’s social power: a private setting where wealth, performance, and command appear to coincide.

The party’s apparent refinement is unsettled by the mixture of people, beings, and customs gathered there. The scene’s extravagant décor and ceremonial atmosphere coexist with a host whose later behavior is loud and theatrical. The contrast makes the room feel less like a secure domain than a stage on which authority must continually be performed.

The Rumpus Room and Its Reversal

At the party, Hassan is at first associated with the wealth and spectacle surrounding him. Later, his face swells and his lips turn purple; he removes his suit made of banknotes and throws it into an open vault. He then announces “Freedom Hall here, folks!” in a false Texas accent and dances the Liquefactionist Jig, ending with a can-can to “She Started a Heat Wave.” His costume, money, and political performance collapse into one flamboyant gesture: wealth is literally taken off and put away as the party’s order becomes unstable.

The reversal becomes explicit when Hassan blames A.J. for the disorder, shouting, “This is your doing, A.J.! You poopa my party!” A.J. answers with an insult that calls Hassan a liquefying gook. The exchange sets the host’s desire to preserve his party against a guest’s open defiance. Hassan can name the disruption, but naming it does not restore his control.

The chaos escalates as guests flee and the room is overtaken by a crowd. A.J. fights back, while Hassan protests that the scene is a shambles and condemns it as indecent. His response is not to reclaim the party through authority but to appeal to an older standard of respectability, even as the spectacle around him overwhelms that standard.

Conflict with A.J. and the Ending

Hassan’s conflict with A.J. ends in expulsion rather than reconciliation. Calling A.J. a “cheap Factualist bitch,” Hassan orders her to leave and never darken his rumpus room again. The command asserts a boundary around his property and his social world, but it comes after the party has already been transformed beyond his control. Hassan retains the power to ban A.J. from the room; he cannot undo what has happened there.

The episode leaves Hassan defined by the gap between his conspicuous resources and his limited authority. His room, banknote suit, vault, and political dance promise command through wealth and display, yet the party becomes a site of reversal and disorder. His final dismissal of A.J. restores a verbal hierarchy only at the moment when his ability to govern the spectacle has failed.

Narrative Significance

Hassan’s party turns political allegiances into theatrical action. His accusation identifies A.J. as responsible for ruining the gathering, while A.J.’s reply identifies Hassan with liquefaction. The clash places opposing political labels inside a personal confrontation, so that ideology is not presented as abstract doctrine alone: it is also a contest over hospitality, insult, and the right to occupy a room.

The episode also uses grotesque excess to undermine the distinction between polished entertainment and public disorder. Hassan’s ornate setting and banknote costume do not shield him from the unruly forces of the party; they make the failure of his control more visible. His importance lies less in a developed personal history than in this sharply staged reversal, in which the host’s display of power becomes the setting for its humiliation.
